Join our Fall Marathon Training Team!
Are you planning to run a fall marathon? Train with us! The MinneapolisRunning.com community is extensive, with readers and subscribers from every state and from countries all over the world. Together, we are a plethora of running experiences and abilities. Since 2015, nearly 1,200 runners have downloaded our free marathon training plan in preparation for their races.
We want to bring this online community a bit into the real world through a virtual fall marathon training team. Whenever your race, let us help! This isn’t a competitive team (unless you want it to be), rather, a group of like minded runners who want the benefits that come from training in a team based environment.
The benefits of running with a group are vast. A team environment offers added accountability and consistency and the benefit of learning and being challenged from a wide range of experiences. In addition to providing a top notch training plan, we want to facilitate a learning community of runners by fostering and encouraging growth with the single focus of running a marathon.
Starting today, we’re launching the Minneapolis Running fall marathon training team!

About our Marathon Training Plan
Our marathon training plan is written by Antonio Vega, former elite runner with Mizuno and Team USA Minnesota. He is a 2:13 marathoner and a 61 minute half marathoner. While those times are impressive, they are NOT what makes him an authority when it comes to creating a marathon training plan.
What makes him smart is his ability to put together plans that will realistically challenge runners beyond what they thought they were capable. I have multiple examples of how he has done this for me personally, and for many other runners.
We know that runners are unique, and while there are basic principles everyone should follow, we are all an experiment of one, from injuries, to travel schedules, to self-evaluation of ability. Our plans are slightly customized to you and in your Final Surge account; you will have the ability to move around training as it fits your schedule and goals. A totally customized training plan is available in the monthly coaching.
In general, a typical week of training is anywhere from 4 – 7 days of running (your choice), one long run, one or two days of something faster, and then a lot of easy miles. The total weekly mileage will vary from 40 miles for beginner, to 70 miles for advanced runners.
Beginner Plan
This plan is ideally suited to someone who is ready to complete the full marathon distance. It could be your first marathon, or your first marathon after many years away from the sport. It includes 4 days of running per week, with a max of about 35 miles per week. You can expect long runs and easy miles, but no real speed work.
Intermediate Plan
This plan is ideally suited to someone who has run a marathon or two in the past, and is looking for a bit more structure. It includes 5 – 6 days of running per week, maxing around 40 – 50 miles per week. You can expect long runs, easy runs, and some speed work.
Advanced Plan
This plan is for competitive runners who are looking to hit a specific marathon goal time. Expect 6 – 7 days of running per week, with a maximum of around 70 miles per week. You will be treated to long runs, easy runs, and typically two days of speed work.
When do we Start?
The best time to start training for a marathon was yesterday, but don’t worry, the second best time is today! While your specific marathon may not be for several months, you’ll have the best experience possible if you start slowly building your mileage base now. Your official marathon training plan will start 16 weeks from your individual race date. While our main focus will be on the Twin Cities and Mankato Marathons (October 9 and 16 respectively), we would love to have you train with us regardless of when your marathon takes place.
Join our Team!
Whether this is your first marathon or you’ve run dozens of them, we are here to help you achieve your goals and have fun along the way!
